Control notice blitz on roofing contractors

19 Jun 13 Roofing contractors are being warned of a blitz on sites by Local Authority Building Control (LABC) to check that they have done their paperwork.

LABC is checking that contractors have submitted their building control notification, as required by law.

The purge started on 1 June and will run throughout the summer. Roof refurbishment projects in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings are being targeted.

If the purge uncovers any unregistered work, the building owner will be required to pay to ‘regularise’ the work and the roofing contractor will have to explain in writing why they are not complying with regulations.

The LABC have the authority to fine companies and review all work over the previous two years to ensure Building Regulations compliance.

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has reminded all roofing contractors of their legal obligation to register all reportable roof refurbishment work and has advised contractors who are not already in the CompetentRoofer scheme to join it. The scheme allows contractors to self-certify refurbishment work for building regulations.
