The £5m facility under construction on Nottingham’s Jubilee campus will enable testing of propulsion systems for transport industries.
The steel frame building will have metal cladding, high-performance acoustic doors and integrated photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate on-site renewable energy.
GF Tomlinson is expected to complete construction works in December 2025.
The hydrogen propulsion systems lab will feature cryogenic capabilities and environmental chambers suitable for altitude testing, enabling the testing of propulsion systems using gaseous hydrogen, ammonia and other green fuels – to support industries including aerospace, automotive, marine and power generation. It will be connected to the megawatt-class physical testing capabilities of the nearby Power Electronics & Machines Centre (PEMC).
This is GF Tomlinson’s eighth project for the University of Nottingham. It is already on site refurbishing the Central Building on the Castle Meadow campus and recently worked on the Advanced Manufacturing Building on Derby Road, close to the new hydrogen lab site.
