Architectural aluminium systems from Kawneer have helped a new school secure BREEAM Excellent status. Kawneer’s AA 100 curtain walling (structurally silicone glazed with 50mm sightlines), AA 601 top-hung casement windows and AA 605 low/medium-duty swing doors were used on the £22m Brighton Aldridge Community Academy.

Architect was Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, main contractor was Kier and cladding specialist was Maidstone-based Leay, Kawneer’s longest-established dealer.

The palette of materials is drawn from the contrasting colour and textures between the flint and chalk from the neighbouring South Downs. The front elevation is clad in a blend of locally-produced anthracite and dark-facing bricks, which provide a textured surface that also forms the plinth upon which the building sits.

The first floor has a system of full-height flush glazing, creating a smooth surface that contrasts with the textured one below. A white chalky brick has been used for the external wall to reflect light, while continuous ribbon windows (the AA601 casements) provide another strata.
