Skanska to build new Swedish laboratory

2 Oct 13 Skanska has signed a contract with Akademiska Hus for construction of a major part of the new research laboratory at the Karolinska Institutet campus in Solna, Sweden.

When the research laboratory is completed in 2018 it will be one of the largest in Europe, with room for 1,700 scientists and other personnel. The contract value is about SEK 1.2bn (£116m).

The new laboratory, which has the working title Biomedicum, will be constructed in the eastern part of the Karolinska Institutet site. Experimental research from several scientific disciplines will be take place at the 63,000m2 laboroatory. Skanska’s assignment also includes preparatory ground works.

Sustainability is in focus in the construction, in choice of materials as well as in technical solutions. The intention is that Biomedicum will be certified according to the Miljöbyggnad standard.

Skanska is already building the nearby Karolinska Hospital (link opens in new tab).
